Chasing And Repoussé
 
 

The great tradition of chasing and repoussé, which had its artistic peak during the Renaissance, finds its full application in this course. The students will learn this ancient art, which allows creation of jewellery through successive plastic deforming of a precious metal sheet. The techniques give the piece lightness, plasticity and softness of lines impossible to achieve in any other way. A maximum of 6 students per class can attend this course with lessons once a week. All materials and tools used will be provided by the school, included in the price.

Program: introduction, theory and brief summary of the history of chasing and repoussé. Tools overview: pitch bowl, different types of pitch and its ingredients, historical and modern, iron punches for chasing and repoussé, chasing hammers. Preparation of support material; correct positioning of metal sheet in pitch; heating and cooling pitch; thermal treatment and treatment of metal sheets' surface; techniques for using chasing hammers and techniques and behaviours of different chisels used on the metal sheet.
All techniques used for working the metal sheet; design transfer, tracing, initial chasing, chasing, embossing/ repoussé, finishing, piercing and polishing. Chisel irons (forging, shaping and polishing to mirror finish).
